Dr. Knapp Kentucky – Colorado – California As we embark on the second round of six teams, we learned that after Dr. Knapp has a team do well in his room, he likes them to stay there. So, we have Colorado and Kentucky showing up again with freshly minted with one loss, California. These teams are all legitimately good or they would not be here. Kentucky is a team of great balance, while Colorado has two dynamic quizzers, and California has the indescribable Anthony “Double A B” Chicas. So in addition to teams, this is a battle of styles. In the first five questions, the teams with dominating individuals showed off their speed with each initial jump being won by either Dani, Katlyn, or Anthony. But Kentucky feasted off the errors to get 30 points, to make the score 30-40-40 after five questions. After the initial flow, the quiz slowed down a little bit and others were able to get some initial jumps. When the quiz becomes more balanced, it must benefit a team with the depth of Kentucky. So Kentucky looked stronger in this section to pull ahead, but then Dani went on a mini run on questions 9 and 10 to bring the score to KY 70 – CO 80 – CA 60. What do you do when the quiz seems to be getting stressful? Ask back-to-back quotation questions, of course. Kentucky owned those, but Anthony and Dani responded in ways that only the great ones can, and the quiz is looking to be incredibly close. It looked like we may enter the error zone with all three teams within ten points of each other, so California decided to make errors, and while Kentucky and Colorado appreciate it, we called a time out before the re-asking of Question 15 with the score KY 110 – CO 110 – CA 80. Time outs may evoke images of screaming coaches, but for California it is apparently where they go to collect their game, as they came out of the time out with back-to-back jumps, but after the challenge, the second answer was deemed incomplete. Thinking it was unfair to let California get all the errors, Colorado missed the tossup. In a consistent game of one-ups-manship, California tried to make another error, but Dr. Knapp called it right, even as Anthony was shaking his head from side to side. So, going into question 18, it is KY 120 – CO 120 – CA 100. That isn’t close enough, so a couple of errors and a freebie make it all square at 110 with three to go. Question 18 – Katelyn from Colorado gets +20 Time out, as Pastor Jono decides to tell his team that victory is likely if they don’t make an error. The crowd is debating math, while the quizzers are praying to keep God’s attention off their opponents. Question 19 – Anthony from California misses it. Kentucky 1 gets the tossup. Time out, as Mrs. Massengale tells her team that they are up 30 with one question to go, so they would be wise to not stand up, unless they were 100% sure. California is wondering if they should stand or just insist upon one of the other teams to get it. The quiz starts and after a few offerings, Anthony finally tried a quote to end the cycle, but neither Colorado nor Kentucky took the tossup bait. Yet, Katelyn answered who cried in Mark 3 worrying that we may cry forever if someone didn’t finally answer. Final score KY 130 – CO 150 – CA 90 A pretty good day for Colorado, but a better tournament coming down the pike for Colorado and Kentucky, Congratulations all.
