Quiz Number: 7 Quiz Master: Craig Scott Team 1: TN Team 2: NJ Team 3: PA Running Commentary: Just chatted with Old Paths (PA) for a moment before the quiz, a special privilege reserved for biblequizzer.net media members (ok, not really). They did not quiz in round 1 and will face their early morning Nationals nerves here in round 2. Some comfort for them should come from quizzing against TN and NJ. Neither of those teams are usuals at national-level tournaments. On paper, most would assume this will be a cake walk for PA. For those of you who have learned about a new quiz team from Tennessee called Ridgeview who have exploded onto the scene and will likely be mainstays in our circle of quiz for years to come, this TN team is NOT Ridgeview. I believe Ridgeview does not have a school and solely represents their church. Back to this quiz, Coach Keenan (PA) has informed me that his Old Paths team "does not know their verses, are not prepared, and also look goofy." He was kidding of course. They're all sharp-looking young men and women. On to the quiz. Daniel Cler, PA's team leader, misses question 1 because question 1 had a faulty reference. It's thrown out and we'll start again. Daniel's up again on Question 1 to quote 1 Timothy 3:1 but botches it. It's a verse he'd usually nail. Again, these early jitters are more easily overcome when the competition is weaker. TN misquotes it as well and NJ misses their free question. Daniel (PA) nails his 3rd jump on Question 1 and the quiz is off and running. But hold the phone, NJ spots a scorekeeper error. Teams do not get an error when missing free questions. TN is on the board! Daniel (PA) gets #3 and Josh (PA) nails 4 & 5. TN:20 NJ:0 PA:80 after 5. NJ gets on the board on #6, but TN regains their 20 point lead on #7. There might be a battle here for the middle win, a welcome sight after the last quiz in this room saw the low team never jump. Josh (PA) nails his 3rd but PA is not in the error zone. They are clearly the best team but jitters and the interesting wording of certain questions are proving to be formidable foes. Josh gives more information than Pastor Scott was wanting but is counted correct for his 5th answer of the quiz. TN:40 NJ:20 PA:140. As an aside, it's interesting to see quizzers and the coach from NJ asking Pastor Scott several rules-related questions. We don't see this at most tournaments but AACS is unique in that some schools only do Bible Quiz once a year and it's here at this tournament. In other words, they don't really know the rules well. Pastor Scott just called all coaches to the table to make sure his ruling was correct after NJ questioned a situation. The quizmaster was correct. Pastor Scott's grace and patience in dealing with these types of situations is exemplary not only to all quizmasters but to all believers. Josh quizzes out on a very tough finish this verse question: "Quench not..." Josh finished with "the Spirit" and earned his quiz out. PA is running away with the quiz. In the battle for the middle, NJ wins the jump after a PA error but misses. TN misses the free question and retains a 20 point lead on the middle. A nice bounce back, TN nails the initial on 15 and has pushed the lead on NJ to 40. TN:60 NJ:20 PA:210. After PA nails 16-18, TN opens the door on the middle, losing 10 points with a question 19 error. Their lead is only 30 as we go to the rebound for question 19. But after hearing the whole rebound, PA jumps and nails it. Barring a TN error on 20, the outcome is decided. PA nails the initial and we're done here. TN:50 NJ:20 PA:310.
