Ah, but if we're going so far as to get rid of the quizmasters and to make it electronic, why stop there? Why not make it completely electronic; Quizmasters, system, and quizzers? That way we could all sit at home and “Bible Quiz” on our computers. I mean, after all, would it not save a lot of time and money that is otherwise spent in travelling?

Yes, rolling is unfair and every Quizmaster does it now and then; but for the most part, I think the majority of them are usually pretty consistent: whether that be, in stopping dead (mid-word), finishing a word, or rambling on for another 2-3 words. And so, part of the challenge in quizzing is learning to deal with the inconsistencies of the entire system in a godly manner.

If we wanted perfection, or if we just wanted young men and women to learn the scriptures, there are better ways. At least to me, I do not see the main goal of quizzing as being to memorize the Bible; but rather, as a way of teaching this generation to live out them out. Sure, we can know the entire Bible word-for-word, and we could completely annihilate every team in every tournament we go enter, but if we do it without the character of Christ, where would we end up?

Is there not truth in the saying: “Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth?” Or in the fact, that before knowledge, comes virtue? “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge…”

Yes, it is true that we need to know the scriptures and that if we do not, we will very quickly fall into damnation, but that cannot, must not, be the whole goal.

Gracebekahekah you are definitely on to something there. hahaha

I like same question. That was one of the main strategies of our team, "let the other teams error, and we get the tossup." And I have to say it worked pretty welll... And though we won Scqanit three times, we still struggled to get highs all day. We got more middles at that tournament than at any other, because of the new tossup.

Personally, I think that implementing the new tossup will eliminate a lot of the strategy involved in quizzing and will take away some of the "humanity" of quizzing (pardon the horrible term.) Part of the "world of bible quiz" is having to deal with different quizmasters and their cadences and their rulings. It's another challenge of the game, and more experienced qizzers benefit. They know where to jump with each quizmaster and can teach the new kids those things also. In a lot of our practices, we would "teach" the younger kids about different quizmasters and how to best quiz with them. We would tell them if you could jump fast or slow on his tossup cadence, or if he paused and forced you to wait that extra half-second. i guess what I am trying to say is that giving a new tossup across the board eliminates the things that I viewed as challenges in my time of quizzing. Things that made the game that much more interesting. In trying to "perfect" quizzing we MAY be eliminating what makes the game the way it is.

K. That's my thoughts...

What we really need is to get rid of the Quizmaster altogether and have a completely electronic system that asks the questions. That would eliminate all "rolling" as well, which I think is more unfair than the fouls.

If the quizmaster had perfect timing I think this would work. But, since most of them are human, I believe it would be impossible to get a accurate reading on this.

For instance, lets say that a quizzer manages to time their jump perfectly (at the end of the word “question”), but the quizmaster was just the smallest part of a second slow in pressing the reset button: than that quizzer (who was indeed first) would not get the jump and it would go to another who actually jumped 2nd, or may even have jumped 3rd or 4th.

Or, depending on which system you're using, you could have the opposite problem; that of quizzers jumping to soon and getting the question., or of receiving a lot of fouls (which I think is what we're trying to eliminate) This would be a problem mainly with the QuizTime and the QuizMaster systems, as they both allow people to jump while the reset button is being pressed. I think this is what you talking about with having some one watch the lights closely?

In short, I believe it would cause many more problems than it attempted to solve and would be quite difficult to implement at the least. I may be wrong, but I do believe that some quizmasters already use a method very close to this.

Personally, I like the way Mr. Ludlow does his tossup (even if it seems I almost never get it…), with the word “question” being a single syllable. I think this allows quizzers to better anticipate and to be able to jump with the assurance that they have just as good a chance as any one else on the seats. Granted, this does take some getting used too, but insofar as I've seen, I believe it to be the best solution to date.

I do like using the same question, but, like others, I sometimes experience frustration when a quizzer gets to answer who appeared to have jumped no slower or faster than the last 12 people that received a foul.

Then it would be very clear whether the jump was foul or not. Of course, you would need a person to watch the lights closely to see who fouls (if anyone) first. Do you think that would work? Or would it be too much trouble to be worth it?

I wrote that before Nationals week, and have since changed my view on the matter. Here's my new thoughts on the matter. What do ya'll think about this solution?

Luke: I have always been an advocate of the same tossup question, but recently, I have been seeing the need to change this format. When two competitive teams are going hard after the tossup, there can easily be 6-8 fouls handed out. And when the quizmaster finally rules a jump properly timed,(no offense to any quizmasters) it usually is no different than any of the other jumps. He is just getting wore down. This is not fair to the quizzers or the quizmaster. And a new tossup question is not the answer. This does not reward a team for not erroring the initial question, and more often than not the tossup is errored, causing more time to be lost. Some quizmaster let quizzers jump when they start “question”, and this has been met with limited success, but has not been widely accepted. My solution to this issue is this: limit the number of fouls a team can get to three: after the limit has been reached, an error is assessed, and the other team receives a free question. This would require teams to be far more disciplined, or they would face the consequences. I have never seen this format used, so it may be a complete flop. But I think we all agree something needs to be done.

From the other thread concerning a "New Tossup" Question:

Cassy_Abbot - What does everyone think about the new question on the toss-up? Do you think it is better to do it that way 'cause I hate it!

faithylofgren - Less fouls - quizmaster heaven. It never bothered me either way, but I guess I preferred having the same question for the toss-up.

LukeMiller - I like having the same question, regardless of the fouls.

D.JThomas - I am somewhat new to this concept, having only quizzed AACS style for 2 years, but I personally enjoyed the repeating of the question to the other teams. Now that may have something to do with it being the only way my team had a chance at some tournaments, one can never tell…

To me it added a certain element to the quiz that I have not found in any other style except AG (not sure if they still do it or not). I am not sure I can explain it accurately and so will forbear at this time.

Silas Miller - I think having the same toss-up is better if a quizmaster lets the quizzers jump when he starts the word question not when he ends it. It is a lot easier to judge if you have started a word then ended it.

Tina Abbot - I would totally go with keeping the same toss-up. If a quizzer knows his verses well enough to know the toss-up question, don't punish them by changing the question. I also think that getting up when they start question should be fine.

Cassy_Abbot - Just make question a one syllable word than you'll never have to worry about not getting enough out. A quizmaster at the DC Invitational did it and it was awesome! Though some of the quizmasters from down South might have some problems talking that fast…..

Caleb - Even though some the quizmasters from the South are a little slower, it's not like we're doing them a favor by letting them quizmaster us. So I think should respect them since they put so much time into quizzing. They have a hard time understanding people that talk fast. A part of being a good quizzer is being able to adjust to different quizmasters. I do appreciate all the time and money so many people put into quizzing for us.

Let the tale go on...
