Thanks for all of the suggestions. The making them pay didn't work since my quizzers would be happy to get a weekend off. However, the candy thing worked very well. The next day, three of my quizzers had memorized about fifteen verses.

I think the main reason quizzers study verses is their own motivation to quiz and, trying to make the team (at least for me). Of course on those days you don't want to study, parents can give you some good reasons to feel like it. I don't think you should make anyone quiz, because their heart won't be in it and they can have a bad attitude that hinders the team.

So apparently we have Mrs. Wells to thank (sigh) for getting third to you KY people at SCQANIT three years in a row. Those losses are the ones that bother me the most. (heavy sigh) Heehee, I was sure it was all your natural motivation and dedication to BQ, too! Thanks for enlightening us.

Wow. One of the major problems of all time in Bible quizzing. Wasn't Bible Quizzing designed to get kids to memorize and reason the Bible? Yet continually quizzers struggle finding the "gumption" to get the verses memorized. I know I struggled to memorize at times. What kept me memorizing??

Well, I would like to say that it was my absolutely amazing sense of responsibility and dedication to my team and the Bilble, for that matter. But, not suprisingly, that is not the case. I had a kind of sophisticated and psychological motivation. The process went something like this: my mom would say, "AARON GET YOUR VERSES DONE BEFORE I GET THE PADDLE AND BEAT THE DEVIL OUT OF YOU!!!" Believe it or not, it had a profound effect on my mind and body. I would immediately feel stimulated to have a close relationship with the Bible for the next hour or two.

Okay. This may be a LITTLE drastic, but I think that I can say that the parents' role is really probably the best motivation for the child. I'm not really a fan of forcing kids to quiz, because their heart won't be in it; but once the child makes the commitment, the parents should probably use their extensive powers of persuasion to make sure they go through with it.

Parents aren't interested in taking that role?? Well I would suggest you hire a Bible Quiz bouncer. No money?? Be the bouncer. Lol. I'm obviously joking, with a slight trace of seriousness. As the coach I think that you need to make it a point to explain to the kids to make BQ a priority in their life. Explain how much the Bible will benefit them down the road, and how much all that reasoning practice will help them in school.

Sorry padjumper that nobody has responded...(busy time of year with school and quiz season starting up again)

When i quizzed in Little League we had a "prize bag" which had all sorts of goodies and fun stuff in it...our coach kept charts on how many points/verses everyone had, and we had to have a certain amount before being free to get our hands on the contents of said prize bag. That's a great way to motivate younger kids, but it's tough when the kids are older and aren't putting the effort into memorization. I think in the past our program has - say, before a tournament - set a required number of verses that each quizzer must have memorized in order to go on the trip. If you can't quote your verses, you can't go. (or in other cases, if you can't quote them, you have to pay your way)

Another thing our coach used to do to us was give us written tests at practice, and grade us on them. but personally I would have been bored to tears if I participated in quizzing and didn't memorize...it's no fun when you don't know anything!

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to motivate quizzers to memorize? I have a group of absolutely amazing quizzers; however, I can't seem to get them to memorize. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
