It seems like it has been absolutely forever since anyone has posted anything, so I figured it might be best to get some creative juices flowing again. In other words, I'm going to ask the age-old question, “What happens this upcoming quiz year?”
Of all the years I have quizzed, I think that this year will be the most up-in-the-air. There are so many people who are graduating this year who have been staples at national tournaments for many years now, that really I think it would be the best year possible for a little known team to burst onto the national stage and do very well. Just to name a few of the people who have graduated, you've got Tyler Zeimer, Luke Reins, Faith Lofgren, (by the way, sorry if I misspell your name!
) David Tyrrell, Phil Self, Casey Lovegrove, and many other high caliber quizzers. I'll run through some of the top 10 ranked teams from last year with my thoughts about them.
1. Calvary FL.
This team has been a contender for a very long time. I don't know of a time when my team has quizzed against them that they haven't been a factor in that quiz. David Tyrrell is an amazing quizzer who always seems do well at every tournament, even when the rest of his team doesn't. In the few bad quizzes he has, it seem that the rest of the team is able to keep them in the running. Granted it always helps when you have Kelsey Davies as a back-up. Unfortunately for them David, Kelsey and I think another quizzer are graduating this year. (aww, shucks!
) In contrast to their impressiveyear this past year, I don't think they will be a top 3 team, if even a top 5. I don't think they brought a full team to any tournament this past year, so, I might be wrong, but I think they are running low on quizzers.
2. Mukwonago WI.
Another really good team, but this team has come on the scene fairly recently. I remember the first time I quizzed against them was at Squanit two years ago. I went into the quiz not knowing much about them, and wrongfully assumed they had just started quizzing, and thus might have potential to be good but probably had not yet realized that potential. They got a high in that quiz.
Whoops, guess I was wrong. After a top 3 finish at I believe both Squanit and AACS, this team certainly has become a contender at every quiz they go to. If they could keep the team they have now, I could foresee a great year for them next year too. But, Luke is graduating, as is their next best quizzer. (I think his name is Tyler?) So, like Cal FL, I think they will not be as impressive next year. Top 10?
3. Woodside CO.
A team with one of the deepest quizzer base, obviously next to the 40+ quizzers that PVKY has at their disposal. Aren't like six of them Selfs too? This team also had a good year this year finishing 4th(?) at Athens, 4th at CI, and 2nd at AACS. I can't remember what place they came in at Squanit. Of the top three teams, I think this team has the most potential for next year. They are graduating Phil, but Erica and the Borkerts are staying, and Bailey might come back for a 5th year of high school. To me, this is the best team next year.
4. Scripture NM.
Wow.
This team seemed to come out of nowhere. 4th(?) at Squanit and 5that AACS. This team could very well be the best team next year, although I would put them second. They, to my knowledge do not graduate any quizzers, so they keep Annie, who is, to say the least, a really, really good quizzer. This could be a VERY scary team next year.
5. Temple TN.
Any team with Kelton Balka on it is automatically entered into my top 5. They really have put together an impressive team in a very short amount of time. Usually the turnaround from starting a new team to national recognition is at least a couple years. This team came out at Athens with, I believe, a top 5 finish, got 2nd at Blue Ridge, 2nd at Squanit, and 6th(?) at AACS. An amazing first year for them, and I see many more good years in their future. They also do not graduate any quizzers this year. Top 3.
6. Heritage NY.
A very good team for many years in a row. Mrs. Rodgers and company have done a impressive job always bringing a contender to every quiz. It showed this year, as usual. 2nd at Athens, top 5 at Ci and Squanit, and 3rd at AACS. I can't believe I am typing this, but I think this year they will not be top 5. Maybe top 7. They are losing Faith this year, and I think a couple others, but they do have other good quizzers who have the potential to dominate. I just don't think they will. But I will be happy to be proven wrong. Go for it!
7. Hillsdale FL.
Another new, but VERY good team. 1st at Michigan, 2nd at CI, and a mediocre rest of the year. When at its best–I think this team is unstoppable. Mrs. Barber is a transplant coach from California, so she knows what she is doing. The only thing about this team is it is so unpredictable, even in the middle of a quiz. By question 8, is could be a 100-40-20 lead. But then they start to error, and by the end of the quiz, they are fighting for their life. If they could get the whole idea of controlled jumping, this team is top five easily. Probably top 3, but I already have 3 top three teams! From what I understand, I think they only have graduated Rachel Williams. They still have Bobby Smith (top Squanit quizzer) and alot of other talent.
8. Calvary SC.
What is it with the name Calvary? I think it just automatically makes you a good team. Anyway, this is another one of those teams that nobody would be surprised if they won two or three major tourneys in any year. Unlike David Tyrrell, I am not sure I have ever seen a bad quiz that Tyler had. He always seems to be hot in a quiz. It is unfortunate for them that South Carolina does not allow homeschoolers to quiz at AACS, because I could have definitely seen them as a top 5 if not top 3 team at AACS. If there is a quiz in which Tyler is not as hot as he could be Casey Lovegrove and Drake (don't know his last name, sorry!) add enough depth to get them into the next round. They had a decent year this year, but I think it was a slightly disappointing last year for Tyler. 3rd at Athens, 1st at CI, 3rd at Blue Ridge, out of the top 5 at Squanit, 9th at AACS (without Tyler) To any other team, a good year; but I think that Tyler would have liked to make more of a splash. Again, I believe bothTyler and Casey are graduating this year.
9. Faith MI.
A team that is always hanging around, but never quite able to make its bust to the top. To me, if they don't graduate any quizzers this year, look out for them. I think this year could be the year the make their vault to the top 5-7. They made a good showing at Squanit, and I am not sure how they did at AACS, but I think it was pretty decent.
Well, that is my opinion. I'm sorry it took so long to explain. What does everybody else think?
