STARTUP YOUR YEAR!!!!!!

Welcome everyone to 2007! I hope this year will be as good as the last. So, to acknowledge the new year, I will call this column (for one week only!) Startup Your Year!!!!!!

Cool.

Question: Jesse, I’m reallllllllly tired and its reallllly late BUT I can’t fall asleep. What do you do when you can’t fall asleep?
Name: tired State: boredom

I have a tried and true formula almost every night to get to sleep. Around 11 PM, if I’m home, I’ll get in bed, turn on the TV, and play my Nintendo DS until the show ends around 11:30. Then my mind will have sufficiently shut down and I can go to sleep in peace. Of course, lately I haven’t been getting home at 11:00, so I just fall on my bed and I’m gone. Now, I’ve heard horror stories about people who take hours to get to sleep. To them, I’ve got nothing. But I would suggest cleaning your room or sorting through a drawer you never open. And of course, I would also suggest reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. It’s really boring and will get you to sleep in no time!

Jordan: I’m tired just thinking about it!

What is wrong with listening to southern gospel?

Caleb, FL

I don’t really want to get into this topic, seeing as there are many people with many different interpretations as whether listening to music is right, what kind of music, etc.

I would say this: If music is an issue in your household, it is always better to be more conservative than liberal. In the Bible, Paul didn’t have a problem with eating meat, but his brethren did. So instead of trying to convince them that they were wrong, Paul simply refrain from eating meat, as it would cause them to stumble in their faith. On the same note, I’m reminded of a story of a man who ceases from being a Christian because he could not accept the fact that Jesus ate fish.

Bottom line: serve God first, read His word, and the Spirit will lead and give you direction with the little things. Music is a very small issue, and Jesus calls us to be united as a church. Obviously we are humans and are flawed, as we have more than a handful of denominations that are divided, though they serve and worship the same Christ.

Really quick, I would like to say that I am looking forward to going to Athens this weekend, and I hope to see you there! Let’s kick 2007 off right by having a great tournament!

Jesse
