Yesterday afternoon, the Southeast Bible Quiz Association held their November quiz meet of the year. The event took place at the Temple Baptist Academy campus in Powell, TN. It turned out to be a very exciting event. The field of teams included two teams from Ridgeview Baptist in Walland, TN, a team from Lakeview Baptist Church in Rhea County and a team composed of quizzers from Temple Baptist and Grace Christian Academy. Since all of the teams had at least four quizzers, the rules were set to quiz out with five correct answers or four errors.
In the first round, Ridgeview 2 faced Temple of Grace, the team of combined quizzers from Temple Baptist and Grace Christian Academy which included Sean Grace, Scott Firebaugh, Kierstin Balka and Johnny Hancock. Ridgeview 2, the September and October champions, jumped out to an early 100 to 20 point lead by question five. Temple of Grace then narrowed it to 130 to 90 when they got the team bonus on question eleven. However, at that point Ridgeview 2 got the next seven questions in a row to roll to a 290 to 90 victory. Before the quiz meet started, Lakeview Baptist arrived without their top quizzer JuliAnn Jouben who was out of commission due to an illness. They knew that they would struggle without her and they did, but their highlight of the day was that Pastor Jouben quizzed out and won a ribbon. In the second round, Ridgeview 1 faced Temple of Grace in a tight back and forth quiz match. All quizzers on both teams were active as both teams got team bonuses. On question ten, Temple of Grace had a narrow 110 to 100 point lead. The only difference was that Temple of Grace got their 10 point team bonus on question 10. Between questions eleven through nineteen there were three lead changes in this quiz match. Going into question nineteen Ridgeview 1 had a paper thin 200 to 190 point lead. On question 20, Scott Firebaugh won the jump and gave a correct answer to allow his team to escape with a 210 to 200 point victory. In the final round, Ridgeview 1 faced Ridgeview 2 with the possibility of making things interesting with a three way tie for first place. Ridgeview 2 started the quiz match in dominating fashion as Caleb Williams and Benjamin Brewster gave correct answers without errors on eight of the first ten questions. At that point, Ridgeview 1 got more aggressive with their jumping which was a double edged sword as they both increased their points and their errors. Ridgeview 2 spread the correct answers from toss up questions around and was able to get their second team bonus of the day. In the end, Ridgeview rolled to a 270 to 110 victory and it felt like they steamrolled to the Team of the Month trophy as they went undefeated in dominating quiz matches.
There were seven different quizzers that quizzed out forward with five correct answers in a single quiz match and won a Quiz Out Achievement Ribbon. They are as follows:
1. Jonathan Jouben, Sr., Lakeview Baptist
2. Josh Williams – Ridgeview 1
3. Blake Brewster – Ridgeview 1
4. Kierstin Balka – Temple of Grace
5. Benjamin Brewster – Ridgeview 2
6. Emily Williams – Ridgeview 2
7. Caleb Williams, Ridgeview 2
The Quizzer of the Month award was hotly contested this month, especially between Benjamin Brewster and Caleb Williams. Both of these quizzers are from Ridgeview 2 and they both quizzed out in every quiz match. However at the end of the day, Caleb Williams rose to near perfection as he had fifteen correct answers with only one error and he was awarded the Quizzer of the month medal.
I am attaching the team results and individual results for your review. It is very encouraging to see the time that these quizzers and their parents have invested in God’s Word, and it is exciting to think about the way God will use it in their lives in the years to come.
