The Africa Report: What Happened in Nigeria

I am super excited to share with you how we started the Nigeria Quizzing Association this year, how the competition went, and the different obstacles that were overcome. After laboring with Micah Folkers to start Bible quizzing in Cameroon, he created a Facebook page where we could post updates of our upcoming CQA tournaments, and on it was a recap video of our first CQA tournament. A few weeks later, a Nigerian guy called Desmond Idakari watched the recap video on our CQA Facebook page and became so interested in Bible quizzing, desiring that it also be established in Nigeria. He then made inquiries and was directed to Micah. When Micah told me about the possibility of starting Bible quizzing in Nigeria, I was so excited about it because of the love that I have for getting to guide Africans to memorize God's word. So I told Micah that I was willing to help start Bible quizzing in Nigeria. From there we began partnering with Desmond Idakari, a member of Independent Baptist Church Port Harcourt, to get youths from the church who were interested in Bible Quizzing to register.

After creating a WhatsApp group with the Admins, together with Micah we guided Desmond into putting together a group of 50 quizzers from the Independent Baptist Church of Port Harcourt and then assigned them to memorize Mathews chapters 5, 6, and 7.

On July 12th, I left Cameroon for Nigeria. Getting there by land wasn't an easy task for me, due to the obstacles on the way. While I was in Nigeria, I trained a group of six leaders on how to keep scores and serve as quiz masters for the tournament. They were so amazed to see the tournament equipment that where brought from Cameroon because none of them had used such equipment before. Some of the quizzers who came around that same Friday evening saw the equipment, and though frightened by the equipment, they worked harder throughout the night. Some slept only just a few hours that Friday night.

On Saturday the 15th, we began with the preliminary rounds with 10 teams, all from the single church. The first rounds were so strange to most of the quizzers, especially as the scorekeepers and quiz masters were still figuring out how to run the quiz programs well. After a few rounds, everything was figured out and the tournament became so exciting for everyone, so competitive and fun. While the contest was going on, some were already asking me when they would have the next tournament and if other Independent Baptist churches could get involved in it.

After lunch that same day, we began the elimination rounds, and after a couple of rounds, I found some quizzers crying because their team had been eliminated. I felt sad for them but yet happy because to me, that was a sign of how much they were enjoying the competition and loved to stay involved. As we were heading to the final rounds we had some technical issues with the score spreadsheet, and when I contacted Micah, he was able to resolve those issues even though he was in the States. On Sunday the 16th, we had the final round of the tournament after the Sunday service with hundreds in attendance. The quizzers were then assigned to memorize Matthew 8, 9, and 10 in addition to chapters 5, 6, and 7 in preparation for the next NQA tournament in November. Two days later, I returned to Cameroon, Praising God for the wonderful work he had done in establishing the Nigeria Quizzing Association.
